\nBirthplace of Jesus: Church of the Nativity and the Pilgrimage Route, Bethlehem <\/strong><\/p>\n

Located in the city of Bethlehem, approximately 10 kilometers south of Jerusalem, this site holds profound significance for both Christians and Muslims. Since at least the second century AD, the Nativity Grotto within the Church of the Nativity has been venerated as the birthplace of Jesus Christ, making it one of the holiest Christian sites globally and a key witness to the origins of Christianity. <\/p>\n

In 2012, the Church of the Nativity and the Pilgrimage Route were inscribed on the World Heritage List under criteria (iv) and (vi). Simultaneously, the site was also placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger due to severe water leakage in the church\u2019s roof, which threatened its structural integrity. However, following comprehensive restoration efforts by the State of Palestine, the site was removed from the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2019. <\/p>\n

The property possesses Outstanding Universal Value due to its direct association with the birthplace of Jesus Christ. This significance is embodied in the historical and spatial relationship between the church and the pilgrimage route, underscoring its importance in Christian religious, spiritual, and political contexts over the past 1,500 years. The Church of the Nativity is an exceptional example of early Christian architecture, reflecting styles from the fourth and sixth centuries AD, following the Roman Empire’s conversion to Christianity. The church\u2019s architectural evolution during the Crusader period further demonstrates the influence of Christianity on its design, decoration, and the associated religious practices. It also contributed to the establishment of the three major monasteries built in its vicinity, cementing the site\u2019s status as a religious and spiritual symbol for over two billion Christians worldwide. <\/p>\n

The current church, commissioned by Emperor Justinian in the sixth century AD, was constructed over the remains of an earlier basilica (the first church) built in 339 AD by St. Helena. The Church of the Nativity preserves visible remnants of this first church, including its mosaic floor. During the early Middle Ages, the church became part of a larger complex that included Latin, Greek Orthodox, Franciscan, and Armenian monasteries, as well as bell towers and terraced gardens. The Church of the Nativity, along with its subsequent architectural additions, is considered the oldest Christian church in continuous use today. <\/p>\n

The Church of the Nativity is directly connected to the pilgrimage route, known as Star Street, which historically linked Jerusalem to Bethlehem. This route is celebrated annually during Christmas, as it is believed to be the path taken by the Virgin Mary and Joseph on their journey to Bethlehem. <\/p>\n
